Emotional trauma after dental work is so common – so let’s talk about some remedies that might help after the event.
Emotional trauma can include many different emotions:
fright, shock, anger, humiliation, reproach, shame……
Are there any homeopathic remedies that can help with that? The first place a homeopath will look is in the repertory – not just one, but several.
I looked at one of my bigger Repertories (index of symptoms), and found an interesting rubric :
Ailments from anger, vexation, fright with shock.
There are 22 remedies listed here. Don’t worry, I am only going to talk about the 4 top remedies listed:
Aconite, Gelsemium, Ignatia and Stramonium.
1.Aconite:

Someone needing this remedy will be very anguished, distressed, scream with pain and become extremely restless. They might be shaking with shock. The pain is intolerable. There is mental anxiety worry and fear which accompanies even trivial issues.
Worse: evening and night
Better: open air
2.Gelsemium:

Acute anxiety comes on with trembling, stammering and paralysis of speech and muscles. Dull, dizzy, drowsy and completely prostrated. Great apprehension of ordinary events and appearing in public. Muscles refuse to obey the mind.
Worse: damp, bad news, thinking of her ailments.
3.Ignatia:

This remedy is usually used for loss and bereavement. But it can also be used in a situation of shock or anger or when told off. A person needing Ignatia will sigh and sob and can get hysterical or moody. A remedy of contradictory moods, with mood changes occurring in a very short space of time. Anger and grief leads to solitary brooding and taking easy offence.
Worse: tobacco smoke, coffee, strong emotions, grief.
Better: warmth, hard pressure.
4.Stramonium:

Awakens from sleep with great fright. Night terrors. Fright is the trigger for an emotional response which can include:
Incessant and incoherent talking, laughing, swearing. Hallucinations which terrify. Cannot bear the darkness and desires company. Can’t bear to be alone.
Eyes wide open, pupils widely dilated.
Painlessness of most complaints.
Worse: dark, being alone, looking at shining objects
Better: from company
I would add a 5th remedy which is Arnica for the following reasons: dental visits are often accompanied by pain (due to drilling, pulling, prodding) and injury from surgery or dental work.
5.Arnica:

This is the first remedy to think of where injury is the cause of pain, fright and shock. The emotional response will be of wanting to be left alone, of insisting they are fine and not wanting to be touched.
Physically, there might be bruising, bleeding and swelling with dental work. Arnica will bring the swelling and bruising down along with addressing the shock.
Worse: touch
Better: lying down.
