Homeopathy for sports & dance injuries

Prescribing Hints:

In all acute cases, you can use the 30c potency or higher, upto 3 doses a day a few hours apart. If you see no change after 2 days, stop the remedy and think of another one. If the symptoms are really intense, eg pain or shock, then consider using the 200c potency.

INJURIES

Arnica is such a wonderful remedy for injuries, and certainly does not disappoint when it comes to sports injuries. I do a lot of dancing myself, and can have back issues now and again. The last time was 2 years ago when I couldn’t walk without pain. Chiropractic and homeopathy helped me tremendously.

If you fall down, if you over-use your muscles, if there is inflammation, get some topical Arnica – gel/cream or oil and massage it into the affected area. The only caveat with Arnica is that you do NOT use it if the skin is broken.

If you have hit yourself (say with a cricket ball), then in addition to using topical Arnica, if you have swelling and bruising, then take Arnica 30c and it should help to bring the swelling and bruising down. Arnica is indicated where the affected part feels bruised and is worse for movement.

Hamamelis can be used as a cream or lotion topically for where there is bruising but the skin is broken.

If you have broken a bone, there is likely to be swelling and bruising too, so you can start with Arnica, and once the swelling has come down, Symphytum 30c will speed up the healing process.

Arnica is fearful of touch and will say that they are okay when it is clear to others that that are clearly not okay. Bryonia helps if a muscle is torn and movement of any sort is avoided because of pain.

BROKEN BONES

Once the swelling and bruising have gone down, Symphytum can help with the pain of broken bones/fractures as well as speeding up the healing of the bone.

SPRAINS & STRAINS

The 2 top remedies to consider here are Rhus-tox and Ruta-grav.

Whether the cause is lifting something heavy, twisting an ankle, spraining a wrist or falling, any sprain accompanied by stiffness, worst for first movement but better for continued movement will benefit from Rhus-tox.

Rhus-tox is indicated for ligament damage, whilst Ruta is better for the tendons and periosteum. Ruta is particularly effective if joints are involved, but you may need to alternate the 2 remedies if one does not work.

EYE INJURIES

Arnica is best for immediate relief from injury to the eye where there is swelling and bruising.

However, Ledum should be thought of for a black eye if some time has elapsed after the injury and the bruising is still present.

If there is injury specifically to the eyeball, then Symphytum can be very effective for the pain.

HEAD INJURY OR CONCUSSION

Arnica can help with a mild concussion to deal with pain and swelling.

If however the effects are long lasting resulting in mental health issues or persistent headaches, then Natrum Sulph is worth looking at.

Do not hesitate to see a medical professional where you suspect concussion.

WOUNDS & LACERATIONS

Calendula is a marvellous healer of wounds and cuts. The remedy can be taken internally, but can also be used topically as a cream or tincture. Hypericum is excellent for injuries to nerve rich areas such as fingertips, toes, coccyx, where there are shooting pains going in an upward direction.

Hypercal, which is a mixture of both Calendula and Hypericum, is a powerful healer of wounds when used topically in tincture. The tincture should be diluted with water before being used to bathe the affected part.

PLEASE REMEMBER, IF AN ACUTE SITUATION DOES NOT RESOLVE, SEEK OUT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL TO RULE OUT ANY EMERGENCIES.

ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THAT, THERE MAY WELL BE AN UNDERLYING IMBALANCE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY CONSTITUTIONAL TREATMENT.
